Long sunlit winter days and well-drained soil have made Gunma Prefecture perfect for wheat farming and consequently the bread basket of Japan. It's should come as no surprise that wheat makes up a big part of the local diet and the main ingredient in local specialties like udon noodles, okkirikomi, yaki-manju, etc. *Images taken from Visual Gunma (http://gtia.jp/)

Tradition dies hard here and thanks to the efforts of local community associations, Gunma's Yagibushi dance which dates back to the early 1900s, is alive and kicking today. The prefecture is the site of a host of unique local festivals and events, like the Kawarayu Onsen Yukake Festival where brave young men splash one another with water bubbling up from a hot spring. Then there is the Hitoboshi fire festival where people run down the side of a mountain bearing torches before whirling around blazing bales of hay suspended from the end of a rope.
